An Adventurous Soul

Over the years I have had the good fortune to indulge the adventurous side of my personality. As a child I was a dreamer, much of which was fueled by various myths and legends, reading fantasy books and in some ways my strong interest in science.

I was always a shy and very naïve kid (and at 51 I would say I am still that way) and to me there never was a separation between my dream world and my real world. The only difference was that my dream world was something that would happen in the future.

Much of that changed around the age of 10 when I began to get bullied around (strangely enough even my 6th grade teacher used to pull my hair and slap me for not being like her favorite student, my older brother). Going through a couple of years of this pushed me more into my dream world where I first began to really get into fantasy novels and mythology.

So anyway, I studied the various myths and legends of the world, never having enough information to satisfy my desire to learn more since I always believed that one day I would seek out the truth for each of these stories. In some ways, growing up without the Internet at my disposal increased my curiosity and convinced me that the only way to satisfy my thirst for knowledge is to go on adventures.

During that time I also became very interested and researched various real adventurers, like Teddy Roosevelt, Edmund Hillary, Lewis and Clark and David Livingston. While most kids were comparing statistics for baseball and I was exploring the world through the eyes of these adventurers. While most kids were thinking about what sports teams they would play for, I was mapping out routes to climb various mountains.

I read a book called “The Hobbit” that changed things for me. Now of course the hobbit is purely fantasy set in a parallel world to our own, with an amazingly diverse set of cultures. But in many ways, I felt that this unlikely adventurer named Bilbo Baggins put aside his dreams of an adventure and went on a real one (at least as real as the book lol). So since that time I pictured myself as a real world Bilbo Baggins, though I am in much better shape and don’t have hairy feet, LOL.

So I have been putting together some blogs about my adventures, some of which I have posted already. I don’t want to be over indulgent here, but if I may, I’d like to post some more, perhaps in chronological order. I hope you find some of these interesting. Unfortunately many of my pictures have not survived the years, but I will post as many pictures as I can.

So more to follow on this and feel free to comment.
